Time to Evaluate your VM Program

End of summer is time to take a look at your current vegetation management practices via the results you see from this year’s effort. What escape species are you seeing out there now? Did you have to go back and re-treat multiple times for some unexpected weed? Do you feel you got your monies worth for this year’s program? Were you able to work around wellhead restrictions, endangered species and sensitive habitat issues, and the most recent Ground Water Protection Area restrictions?

These are tough questions but now is the time to evaluate because it will start all over again very soon and you need to be prepared. Do not expect the same program to work year after year. Each properly design vegetation management program is specifically designed and built upon by each season and results of management strategies chosen.

Fall/winter rains usually begin anywhere between October and November, and the sooner these rains come the faster weeds will grow as it is still warm enough... BE PREPARED!

Summer Limb Drop

Sierra Consulting & IPM LLC provides Certified Arborist services to many of its clients, including several California cities and counties. I thought it would be a good idea to include articles of interest on trees in this newsletter, as trees are an important part of the vegetation management world. We work around them constantly and what we do under/around them has a greater impact on their health and vigor than we realize.

Many ornamental tree species we have here in California are prone to “Summer Limb Drop”. Known for the strange loud popping sound and the subsequent crush of many parked vehicles, this is a real phenomenon. Several commonly grown species can drop large limbs such as liquidambar, eucalyptus, oak, pear, sycamore, ash and poplar. Statistics in California indicate that limbs normally will drop between noon and 4 PM with no wind reported. This all has to do with excessive water demands and transportation within the tree and there are many research studies available to read up on if you are interested.

The key here is proper tree selection for the site, correct and timely pruning, maintaining tree health and vigor and maintaining a healthy soil profile for landscape trees.
